Director of Content

Location: Remote

Our mission is to create human-centered services. We’re a coalition of digital gov alums who partner with governments and mission-driven organizations to design and build digital services that improve people’s lives. We help our partners build internal, sustainable capacity to transform how they engage constituents.   

We’re looking for a Director of Content to provide stewardship of our growing content practice while also serving as a content strategist on project work. We believe that content is core to making services discoverable and useful. We want someone who can work tightly with UX researchers, developers, and subject matter experts to distill highly complex processes into accessible information. Additionally, we are looking for someone who is able to lead our content practice — defining the impact we have and managing our team toward that goal. Initially we expect the role to involve 75% project work / 25% content leadership and move in the next 4-6 months toward a 50%/50% split.

We’re a fully remote team, and we’re deliberate about building a team culture in a distributed context. We also place a lot of value on in-person meet ups — to conduct research, collaborate with partners, and meet others on the team — when it’s safe to do so. 

In this role, you will 

Provide stewardship of our content practice area

  • Lead and continue to build Bloom’s content practice in the context of a constantly changing Public Interest Technology landscape
  • Directly manage a team of seasoned content strategists working across several different projects. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Holding weekly 1:1s with each member of the content team
    • Communicating strategic decisions clearly, citing clear benefits and drawbacks to foster alignment and a culture of transparency
    • Mentoring members of the team, providing regular feedback and professional development support
    • Fostering a culture of collaboration within the content team to move initiatives forward (e.g. holding a bi-weekly content huddle or iterating on Bloom’s content style guide)
    • Attracting, hiring, and placing team members onto projects in a way that allows them to thrive while also supporting Bloom in serving its mission 
  • Develop and hone Bloom’s strategy for the impact of our content practice 
    • Define the core areas where we want to have an impact, and support the organization in driving toward those goals
    • Proactively engage prospective partners or clients to build strong relationships
    • Help scope proposed work with appropriate time and cost estimates
    • Exercise creativity and non-traditional approaches to improve Bloom’s contributions to our partners and end users
  • Uphold and improve upon Bloom’s mission and values, especially as needs and circumstances change
  • Create, follow, and enforce workflows that make following strategic guidance easier and sustainable
  • Establish and measure progress toward goals, to better understand what’s working/not working and create a shared sense of when/how to adjust our practices
  • Make decisions with an understanding of second-order problems that may arise
  • Take a long-term view and build a shared vision with Bloom leadership

Serve as a Content Strategist on project work

  • Work on a cross-functional team to design, write, and edit content for a variety of products and services. This includes redesigning website content, de-jargonizing key messages, and generally demonstrating the benefits of plain language writing — inside and outside of Bloom.
  • Manage relationships with clients and stakeholders, including assessing requests for changes to content. Gather information to make content recommendations and explain the rationale for decisions. 
  • Develop content style guides and governance documents that consider the ways different pieces of content will work together across a platform — and that draw on user research to meet the specific needs of our partners’ audiences.
  • Use tools like website analytics and user research to organize content in ways that meet audiences’ expectations and information-seeking patterns. Guide partners in using these tools (e.g., provide guidance to perform a content audit).
  • Develop content that aligns with specific style guides, including tone and plain language standards.
  • Coach and learn from other members of the Bloom content team.
  • Incorporate diverse perspectives from a variety of user groups and stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for content to improve outcomes. Draw on deep experience, creative thinking, and collaboration with others to apply content strategically to support our partners and end users.
  • Work in a self-directed way — you’ll collaborate with others on the team but will often be the only content specialist on any given project
  • Be willing to move forward despite ambiguity — we don't always have a roadmap.

We’re looking for

  • At least 7 years of experience designing clear, concise, and compelling web content
  • Experience navigating complex internal and external relationships to work constructively through organizational issues
  • Experience managing a team and building a culture of collaboration
  • A deep familiarity of the Public Interest Technology landscape and specifically the challenges and opportunities related to content strategy 
  • A passion for finding simplicity in complex information 
  • A demonstrated ability to research a topic to write clear and accurate plain language content
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • A relationship builder who enjoys learning about and working with a variety of people and functions
  • An analytical and creative thinker who’s solution-oriented 
  • The ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines under pressure, and collaborate with a distributed team
  • Experience working in an agile, iterative way
  • A demonstrated ability to give, receive, and make improvements based on feedback 
  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor

Salary 

$135,000–165,000 depending on experience
